Virgin Media to increase price of its broadband only packages
Wednesday 21 August 2013 09:11:21 by Andrew Ferguson

Virgin Media may be the only major fixed line broadband provider to offer a broadband service without the requirement to have an active telephone line, but as of the 1st October the savings this represents are sent to be eroded by a £2.50 per month price rise for standalone package customers.

"We wanted to let you know that, from 1st October 2013, the price of your Virgin Media broadband is going up by £2.50 a month. It's never nice when prices increase so we wanted to reassure you that you're still getting a great broadband service."

Extract from letter going out to Virgin Media customers

At the current prices 30 Mbps cable broadband on its own has a standard price of £22.50 per month, and if you take a telephone line too it is a total price £29.49. This price rise will erode the difference to just £4.49 a month, and there in may lie the plan, to get more people to buy the telephone service and benefit from the inclusive weekend, 0870 and Virgin Mobile calls bundle and hopefully revenue will increase as people make the odd chargeable call.

Virgin media have lost a lot of money from people like my and others in my area who have been getting refunded for their broadband for almost a year now in my area, and probably many others, i read so much complaints about the same issues i have had

There are Virgin adverts in the paper trumpeting the fact that you don't need a phoneline. Does it say equally prominently that it costs more if you don't take a phoneline? What do you think? The prices may be in the very small print at the bottom, but it seems misleading to me. They shouldn't be allowed to advertise a price for broadband that you can't actually obtain, only the total price for a phone+broadband package.

agree with jrawle above - but untill the ASA actually for all companies to stop hiding real prices as XXX + line rental etc so virgin are as guilty as all other companies

sky does the same thing
advertise a price for broadband and then adds the price for the line rental

I'm getting fed up with Virgin Media. Their service is getting poorer and they increase prices way above inflation every year. But with this latest increase I'm now looking at broadband providers who can give me a LLU landline + broadband for less than the price of Broadband alone from VM.
