Sports subscription price war unleashed

The battle for content subscriptions and in particular sport is real and truly heating up, and with BT Sport just days from broadcasting real live sport the madness can only get worse.

It appears that Sky is now offering a 'best price guarantee' to new and existing customers who phone them up to order a service, or extend their contract and are also Sky Sports customers. The guarantee claims that they will price match to ensure that the you get the best price for BT Sport and unlimited broadband (including line rental). The BT Sport subscription is separate and is £12/month for SD to non-BT customers, with a free 12 month boost to HD available for a day or two more.

"Price guarantee based on combined subscription cost for Sky Broadband Unlimited, Sky Talk Weekends, Sky Line Rental and BT Sport (purchased separately via BT- see bt.com/sport for info.) over length of contract (based on Sky pricing when taking the offer) and assumes Direct Debit payments only. Sky guarantees to beat any publicly advertised price for an equivalent package of products."

The price comparison is based on the BT prices as of 26th July, so there is scope for BT to respond with its own offers, and by ordering over the phone, people may miss out on various online only offers, including the various vouchers and gift cards that run for limited time periods.

This all gets blown out of the water when you see what Al Jazeera offer.

I wish they would stop these turf wars and actually do something about getting people on connections that is capable of using this stuff first. I also wish the incumbent would focus on what they are supposed to be good at and leave the content provision to the ones that are supposed to be good at it...

On that logic, the post office should have focused on what they were supposed to be good at, kept delivering the post, and never created the business division which became BT. Money is in content, less so in infrastructure. It can be more efficient/economical to bundle the two together. BT's competitors are doing this and it would be foolish for BT not to

I agree completely... but if your entire business model depends on that infrastructure and the ability for people to connect through it, should you not look after that first before going after the golden goose?

when you say sport, you mean football, because it seems like that is the only sport, people think about. Sky and Bt thinks the whole country is football mad, Stupid game, with over paid people kicking a ball between two posts.

vicdupreez , so should Sky stick to TV and stop fiddling around with broadband?

Just providing telephone services is pretty much dead now
Just providing broadband services is peaking/petering out

Its about bolt on services now so its a good move for them.

Providing these sorts of services are also a driver for people to move to faster services such as FTTC/P

Those people who choose to keep their content and service suppliers separate do not get the benefit of this competition. Should that "hidden" subsidy be looked at by one of the competition authorities, as it does restrict competition. Too difficult as the big boys' financing is so obtuse, I suppose.
