Sky Android Apps may have been compromised
Sunday 26 May 2013 10:37:20 by Andrew Ferguson

Overnight it appears that hackers defaced various Sky app entries in the Google Play store, and may in the process have also hacked the Sky Go, Sky+, SKY WiFi and Sky News apps. Therefore the most sensible option for Android users with a Sky app on their phone or tablet is to remove the app until official news is released by Sky.

Barry Collins of PC Pro highlights the possibility that the original call to uninstall the apps comes from the @SkyHelpTeam, but this may itself have been compromised.

Of course there's always the chance that the Sky Help Team Twitter feed has itself been hacked. As Graham Cluley points out, its alerts were sent via Twitter's Web user interface, instead of the usual Lithium Social Web. Some dodgy grammar could also point to a non-native English speaker, or that could be down to the fact they were sent out in the early hours by someone who was tired.

Sky has confirmed to Pocket-lint that its apps haven't been hacked and replaced as suggested by the company's Sky Help Team Twitter account on Sunday morning.

The company has told Pocket-lint that its Twitter account was compromised.

Sky Apps: We have temporarily removed our Apps from the Google Play store following a security alert.

All Sky Apps were unaffected and any Sky Android apps previously downloaded by customers are safe to use. There is no need to remove them from your android device.

As soon as we have restored the apps on Google Play we will post up an update.

I wonder if this is related to sky blocking the app on rooted phones, so someone took revenge.
