Hardware Review: Asus DSL-N55U dual-band ADSL2+ modem/router
Tuesday 13 November 2012 14:35:39 by Andrew Ferguson

Another broadband hardware review has been added to our collection. This time we are looking at the Asus DSL-N55U which has the following key features:

  • Built in ASDL2+ modem
  • Four Gigabit Ethernet ports
  • Two USB sockets
  • Dual band 2.4GHz and 5GHz a/b/g/n wireless networks
  • Media server with support for DLNA, iTunes, FTP, HTTP
  • USB Printer sharing ports
  • Built in VPN Server

We put the router through its paces, and the review also shows how to configure the QoS controls, which with the rise of catch-up TV services is becoming more important as people try to manage their ADSL2+ connections so that one persons usage does not impact adversely on another using the same connection.

If you are a router or other broadband hardware manufacturer and would like us to carry out one of our in-depth hardware reviews with a view to publishing in the new year, rather than the more usual 300 to 400 word summaries hardware usually gets then email us team@thinkbroadband.com.

The other reviews we are currently working on are the WiBE 3G router, TP-Link TL-WDR4300 Ethernet router and the Solwise WiFi USB Catcher.

Can I suggest it might be useful for you folks to do a review of BT's Homehub3. I know it doesn't sound exciting but I'm guessing a high percentage of your readers have or are looking to get fibre broadband as soon as it is available in their area. A big percentage of those folks will be with BT and using the Homehub3. Even if not on fibre BT has a large ADSL customer base using the same router. It would make a good modern day baseline for comparison to other units out there in the marketplace. When I read your reviews I always think how does that compare to what I have already - the Homehub3.

If you are reading this BT, can we have a HomeHub 3 to play with.

Andrew, I have a spare one in the garage you're welcome to. No good to me, I need a 2Wire to squeeze out 1.3Mb on my long rural line

When it comes to congestion management with residential hardware...

Router + Gargoyle firmware > Anything else.

NICE REVIEW...As this model attracted my interest, i did some search and end up at their forums.
Seems their support team are soon to convert one of thelan port in use for ethernet wan port which seems nice and maybe future load balance(according to support stuff at asus forum)
i may go for it as i only use adsl and my line is direct to exchange so no fttc
