BT Wholesale continues its 21CN ADSL2+ roll-out
Monday 20 August 2012 10:30:24 by Andrew Ferguson

ADSL2+ has been available in the UK for many years now, and TalkTalk leads the way in terms of national coverage with their service available to around 93% of UK homes. BT Wholesale is rolling out its own ADSL2+ service, and has now caught Sky in terms of coverage with BT Wholesale offering its service to around 85% of UK properties.

The 85% figure is not the end of the story, the current plan is to increase coverage to 90% by Spring 2013. While ADSL2+ has technical maximum speed of 24 Mbps, advertising rules mean it is advertised as around 13 to 16 Mbps (the speed that at least 10% can achieve). Some are critical of the ongoing roll-out as it largely only benefits those who have a telephone line under 42dB attenuation (~3.5km), but an often overlooked benefit is that the upstream speeds double for the vast majority, from the old standard of 448 Kbps to something in the 700 to 1000 Kbps region. For those who have an ADSL service already a good estimate of your speed under ADSL2+ can be estimated using a speed calculator.

One other advantage to an exchange offering ADSL2+ from BT Wholesale is that it means the exchange supports the 21CN WBC IP backhaul, which means if Openreach was through its own commercial roll-out or a BDUK project to offer fibre services, the exchange would be ready to link the various fibre services back to the providers.

The latest update from BT Wholesale held a list of some 300 exchanges which are scheduled to get ADSL2+ from BT Wholesale, as always the caveat is that plans can change, so do treat the list with a little caution, but it should provide some hope for those looking for faster speeds.

Old news! Announced on 22 May, but good news for those it helps. The BT checker gives latest dates.

Or you can keep an eye on this which gets updated early each month.

https://www.btwholesale.com/pages/static/Library/Network_Information/21CN_Broadband_Availibility/index.htm

These exchanges showed up there first, then samknows a few days later etc. Not all were listed in May's announcement - Pembroke for example.

Even older than that really. There is an Excel document on the BT Wholesale website https://www.btwholesale.com/pages/static/Library/Network_Information/21CN_Broadband_Availibility/index.htm which gives current estimated dates for exchanges. I have been checking this since about this time last year when my exchange was given a WBC enablement date, according to the normal checker, of March 2012. That came in on the checker to Dec 2011, but the spreadsheet has in each iteration put it of first to May 2012, then July 2012, Sep 2012 and now the latest version says March 2013.

The checker site has even more interesting, during June this year it gave a date exactly one month ahead of the date you checked rather than the usual 31st of something. I'll be keeping an eye on this but not holding my breath.

Treat it with extreme caution; Newtown is now on its 3rd revised date this year, now to be done 06/2014!! (Sam knows). I even had prior to the latest revision date, mails from BT telling me of impending update, even day and the completion of upgrade in June 12.

What does this mean? I live in Little Clacton yet have been syncing with adsl24 at 16907kbps since March this year.
Posted by NilSatisOptimum over 4 years ago
likely you are on resold TT etc, rather than Bt based product.
Posted by highlander317 over 4 years ago
yes TT nearly got my money but not over joyed with their customer service. So presumably I will get better choice of ISP's?

Too late for me on Pembroke BT.. I already went LLU - sick of waiting for you to bring something that is ALREADY behind the times.

Fibre? only in my breakfast cereal!

This is not going to bring really fast access to us anytime soon.... but then we are not on the M4 corridor so I guess we are screwed.
Posted by otester over 4 years ago
Don't most of these places have LLU anyways?

Even then LLU is far superior (better usage for price)...

Article does point out that TalkTalk has a larger LLU footprint.

BT Wholesale with the 3dB margin can be faster, and supports Annex M, so for SME use can be better.

Looks like they are ahead on some exchanges, Lyminge is on the spreadsheet as being done next month, but went live last week.
