Virgin Media and London Underground announce first stations to have WiFi

Following on from the announcement that Virgin Media is to bring WiFi coverage to London Underground stations, the first wave of stations has now been announced.

The WiFi service will be available at the following stations by the end of July 2012 and will be free over the summer when London expects to be packed with visitors. The Virgin Media Wifi website will provide up to date information on the progress of the services roll-out.

This list of 80 stations will expand to around 120 by the end of 2012, and to ensure that the service can cope capacity testing using hundreds of devices to simulate a busy platform and a train arriving has been taking place over the last few weeks.

Had Livingstone allowed mobile operators to install a network on the underground passengers could have had voice and data (or just data) connectivity 5 years ago.

Now, a majority of passengers will be forced to pay a premium for short term WiFi access rather than having it as part of their normal 'phone's data allowance.

The wifi only works in the station and not on the train.
How long do you spend in the station.
Not the walking part but the standing there able to us the internet while waiting for the train. max 5 mins.
I cant see a use for this. as soon as you find the site you want a trin will come and the signal will be gone when you board and move.

As a way of letting a phone grab email updates, check maps on smart phone it is sufficient.

This will get used during the Olympics by tourists who can look up information as they travel. However once charged tourists won't want to use it.

For those who travel the tube regularly, it could be useful for syncing email as you travel. Covering just a few stations is fine - but some of these stations already have 3G coverage (eg. circle line which is barely underground). It would be much better to install the equipment in the deeper stations where there will never be any other coverage.
