Two communities in Shetland look set to take part in a Vodafone Open Femto trial. Hamnavoe and Walls are to be the initial locations for the trial, with Unst and Wormadale sitting on the reserve bench.
Vodafone has offered its Sure Signal hardware to allow people to utilise their broadband connection as the backhaul for registered mobile handsets, the Open Femto trials should be different in that no pre-registration is required, allowing vistors and neighbours to utilise the link.
It will be interesting to see how the trials progress, particularly as the Shetlands are not renowned as having brilliant broadband services to piggy back the mobile signal across. For those with slower broadband there is the real possibility that just day to day broadband use will affect the mobile traffic, that is unless Vodafone has somehow planning to implement some type of Quality of Service control for the service to reserve capacity for the mobile signal.
The Northern Isles Digital Forum will hopefully prove to be a good source for information for those living and working in the area.
