While most of the UK is burdened by slow cumbersome processes and roll-outs that always seem to happen in the town they don't live in, some lucky 500 residents in Jersey are set to enjoy fibre broadband running between 40 Mbps and 1 Gbps in the New Year.
Residents in the La Moye, La Rocque and Fauvic areas can register for the trial on the JT website, and registration includes the chance to win an iPad 2. As is normal with early stage trials like this it is a way of JT learning how consumers use the service, and getting feedback on potential product price points.
The plans are such that the majority of the 42,000 homes on Jersey will have access to the fibre products by 2013 and the project completing around 2016. The unique aspect compared to the UK (and many other countries) is that the copper network will be removed, thus reducing maintenance costs and also allowing for recovery of some of the costs in rolling out the fibre network via the scrap value of the copper.
