BT Retail Division Cancels Christmas Updated
Tuesday 04 December 2001 12:46:00 by Andrew Ferguson

The BTretail division has just announced 13000 job cuts which are spread out until 2003 with some of the job losses having already occurred. It is all part of a strategy to turn the company around with the aim of increasing sales by 3%. BBC News have the item at News Online.

Some of the comments are interesting - A BT spokesman said the company did not "envisage compulsory redundancies." which would suggest that either a lot of people are near retirment or just want to leave BT anyway. It's also worth noting that the talk is of BT staff, which means they may switch the people to different companies and outsource more things like Call Centres. How this bodes for quality of customer service is a big question, one cant see it improving if you can shed 13,000 staff.
