Openreach announce 63 exchanges for fibre upgrades

Openreach have today announced another 63 exchanges which will be enabled during the next phase of its super fast broadband network upgrade. This will allow for fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) services delivering 'up to 40 meg' broadband to be provided by service providers to an increased number of users. Some may even be lucky enough to get fibre-to-the-home or premises (FTTH/FTTP) services.

These exchanges are expected to be enabled by late summer 2010.

Nice to see the role-out finally start kicking off. Hopefully more will role on from these around the nation, as opposed to predominantly south.

No mention of Brackley (not really a surprise) but our office is in a village just outside Bicester. I haven't seen any green cabinets though but it's possible we're fed from one of those on the outskirts. That alone would probably double our speed.

what's to say? just proves it isn't rocket science, they could have done it years ago if they wanted to. All this talk of £30 billion is a fallacy, they already own the ducts, poles and wayleaves. replace expensive copper with fibre, put in futureproof kit and sit back and make a mint. Much better to do fibre to the home, but it will come.

Oh I was expecting that post from @cyberdoyle... He simply refuses to believe that people won't pay £1200 to get a FTTH connection when we can get FTTC which is nearly the same speed for free.

BT never said £30bn for FTTC, they started out at £1.5bn. The larger figures were for FTTH.

Actually im quite interested, my exchange is on that list, which ISPs if any are selling these fibre based services? Can you pre-order from any ISP? Also is there anywhere to get info about packages available, the monthly cost and what monthly limits etc and similar are available? Ill consider the service if it meets my personal requirements.

CB - monthly limits etc. are totally the responsibility of the particular ISP. Openreach just provide the pipe from the exchange and the box at the customer end.

Strange that Mile End was chosen and yet Poplar with it's ongoing capacity problems was ignored, i would imagine that Poplar would be a goldmine. i can't yet see any logic behind the choices other than to try to appear not to favour anyone in particular.

I think its just random njalondon or a case of them picking on more modern or large supply exchanges first. There was never any clear definition why BT roll out services to certain exchanges before others, same thing happened with MAX products.

AAISP I know definately does.

Many other independent ISPs will as well, you just have to ask them as it's not mainstream yet.

By the looks of reviews AAISP is your best bet but I think the trial comes with an 18 month contract (like you're going to want to quit?).

In addition, be aware that usage allowances is currently pretty ****.

Toothill exchange was always delayed of upgrades due to a lack of space, llu providers decided to pull out & 21cn was also delayed. I'm well chuffed with this upgrade. I have noticed that blunsdon will also get the upgrade. A lot of people got taken off this exchange last year when they built the new haydon wick exchange and migrated across with decent speeds. I bet they wish they never got moved at all now. Bring it on Swindon. Also with the wifi network being put into place, this really is now becoming the digital city ;P

Ironically, there being no LLU providers probably got it on the list, Mitchy. When there's only BT gear, it's considerably cheaper to provide the environmental systems (since BT sticks with a few pieces of kit with fairly similar tolerances).

Carpet - Yea, that's about your interlectual (intended spelling) level. No, they pick exchanges based on cost and market research, sheesh.

DF - don't assume the fibre goes back to the same local exchange.

CB - rollout is defined by ISPs.

Rollout is also determined by engineering capacity per "region". You can't suddenly decide to roll-out where you don't have the manpower to actually fulfill your commitment...

still all in same areas as the previous 2 announcements with the exception of a few exchanges, the 2 listed east midlands ones are both in leicestershire. coalville is a small town, stoneygate is near the city but serves mainly short lines. Both have cable and BE. They didnt pick an exchange on the west side of leicester which is the area dominated with long lines.

There is every exchange in the UK, all 5461 BB enabled ones, click on it and it explains if it has LLU, 21CN, Virgin and everything else. The list of what exchanges are enabled is the list of 63 above. Here is a list of the other planned exchanges:

The Samknows site doesn't show the FTTP/FTTH sites yet. Not even on Whitchurch or Muswell Hill. I have dropped an e-mail to ask if they intend doing so.

FTTC is behind schedule already..

Heaton Moor exchange 'live' date (for customer orders) 4th Jan. On 26th Dec the checkers stopped quoting a date.. now BT are refusing to give a date at all. And it's not the only exchange affected either.

Carpetburn: Try to be fair to BT, the weather since 16th Dec has been horrendous for working on cabinets outside and new work will take a back seat to repairing faults caused by the snow/frost and travelling difficulties.

This is good news i wonder weather BT look at digital region's roll out plan .This would really put a spanner in the works if bt could roll out fttc before they do .i'm with sky bbi and i stand a much better chance with bt as wholesale links are already in place

Digital Region are rolling out cabinets already around South Yorkshire and have been for weeks ( even in this weather ). Remember DR are doing a lot smaller area than BT, they are at present only doing the 54 exchanges in the South Yorkshire region.....

Serious question - are any of these exchanges outside Virgin's cabled area? I must admit I've got a bit cynical and don't expect to see FTTC in my lifetime out here in the sticks, so if any of these exchanges are not just easy pickings I might get a bit more optimistic ;)

Yes, it is covering all 54 exchanges in South Yorkshire, which will feed to around 1600 street cabinets. A large percentage of these areas are not covered by VM or LLU at present.

DR IMHO is a bit weak in the technical implementation side of things as far as ISPs are concerned though, nowhere near as robust as currently wholesale implementations and hand-offs - unless things have changed dramatically of late.

DF - how do you work out it's cheaper if there is no LLU, surely LLU might move in once FTTC is provided Also it may go back to a different exchnage.

Somerset - It's all down to the price of providing the appropriate environmental systems (BT deliberately gets its kit in quite close tolerance). And it may, but BT have to make choices and It'd be just one of many factors involved.

Most are in cable areas, most are exchanges with at least 6 LLU operators.

lol. It gets better. Not only have the FTTC checkers gone down but BT have said they can't even take orders on live exchanges until the 18th Jan even on live exchanges because their ordering systems aren't ready.

So much for ahead of schedule.. not that I believed that for a minute anyway.

The first tranche, of which my exchange is part, has not even been enabled yet and I still cannot find anything concrete about any FTTC offerings or enablement dates.

Shame we don't know what the criteria are Chrysalis. Providers have input however none of the LLU operators are showing much interest in them leaving BT Wholesale basically. Blame the LLU operators for that, they need to pull their finger out.

The criteria certainly isn't as simple as having loads of LLU and cable available.

Dixi if I was an LLU provider I wouldnt lay my own fibre either such a move based on BT's past behaviour would trigger openreach to react and then lose exclusivity.

40 mbps!! Japan and South Korea already have or is heading for 1G to home..

Here is a speed test from my 100 mbps syncronous fiber connection here in Japan.
It is acually slower than it should be but just to give an idea... the server I downloaded from is some guys home connection.

Dixi, in the past on exchanges BT didnt enable when a community prohect got started or a wireless isp moved in the area BT then enabled adsl in the exchange.

It all kicked off from the 13th post in this thread made by DF..... If Dawn Falcon cant take insults and sly remarks they shouldnt start them. As per usual the Scottish Borders gets nothing when will the Scottish Government realise that there is a large area called the Scottish Borders and Scotland doesn't just consist of Edinburgh & Glasgow and their suburbs they don't need high speed internet as they already have a very fast connection as it is please let the Borders have a go

Long line cabs won't get FTTC as the product has minimum 15M speed.

Its not exchanges where cabinets are installed. But to not be petty, ill answer what i believe you mean... 2 of the London locations has work in progress still, 1 (FTTP) has been put back, another Scottish location cabinet work has not started, other locations now do not have ETA dates available through BTs checker. Hope that answers the question enough, can be more detailed if you like but will probably need multiple posts due to the 600 character limit.

Can anyone give me information on the exchange that covers G75 9GY we are still on the slowest speed available to broadband despite promises over the last four years that we will be upgraded to faster speeds this is harming not only business but private users.

BT is truly a joke.
I cannot believe they left out the Slough main exchange.

BT seems to be rolling out the service to areas that already have a decent broadband services, instead of rolling out the service first to customers with poor service in last mile areas or too far from the exchange(broadband-notspot.org.uk), such as the no broadband spot where I live.

Right next to the biggest trading estate in Europe & no broadband service.

As Slough is holding some of 2012 olympics events, shouldn't BT be upgrading the slough main exchange also?

Plenty of time to the olympics. What events are in Slough?

It's the ISPs that want particular areas, not BT. They probably want exchanges where they can compete with VM.

One would think that 9 miles away from the centre of MANCHESTER,fibre optic cable would be prominent. No, the Walkden exchange, four miles away from my home is not on the list. Why? My broadband, via wi-fi modem, gives me just 2mgb. So slow, my garden snails could do better.
