HD iPlayer available on Virgin Media
Friday 01 May 2009 14:22:16 by John Hunt

Virgin Media have released BBC HD content via their TV based iPlayer portal that means users with a HD V+ set-top box will be able to watch some of their programmes in high definition, on-demand, on their TV. The news follows an announcement two weeks ago about an update to the online BBC iPlayer with HD content becoming available from the 20th of April. Robin Hood, Friday Night with Jonathan Ross and later...with Jools Holland are just some of the programmes that are available.

"As more households become HD Ready, we're keen to ensure that Virgin Media customers benefit from the most advanced digital TV service possible. BBC iPlayer has been a huge success on our TV platform and we're thrilled to be expanding the service with HD content. We're looking forward to increasing our line-up of broadcast HD channels over the next few months and combining the very best of HD and on demand TV."

Katharine Burns Rivington, (Executive Director of Content Acquisition) Virgin Media

Virgin have had over 100 million views of their on-demand iPlayer service since launch with 15 million views in March.

What's the definition that they are using for HD? 720p?

I'm not sure explicitly about the Virgin but I imagine if you require a HD box, they will be sending it in 720p. For the online iPlayer the BBC said "no cheating" and that they'd to 1280x720: http://shurl.net/cj7

At last VM decide to get their finger out and build HD content - not before time - hopefully though, this won't be categorised as one of the 4 'Linear' channels that VM's customers are waiting on

Does watching the content count towards daily download allowance if you have their broadband also??
Also whats the bitrate like and if anyone knows what codec and container are used? Im far from impressed with Iplayer HD content online (Its not what i would call HD, bitrate is far too low for starters, anyone can resize some rubbish quality video, that doesnt make it TRUE HD)

It's delivered via the STB it's nothing to do with the broadband service any more than other VoD services.
