TalkTalk offer payment holiday for struggling customers

TalkTalk has announced an 'Emergency Plan' to help customers in the time of recession by waiving monthly home phone and broadband charges for six months. The payment holiday will save the £6.49 a month charge for the service, although line rental of £10.50 per month will still be payable.

"We want to help our customers as much as we can as we know many face financial difficulties this year. If they are worried about their household finances or their ability to pay for whatever reason, we encourage them to call us.

"If you're anticipating hardship, perhaps as part of a job loss, your home phone and broadband service has never been more important in helping you get back on your feet. We hope our Emergency Plan will keep people connected, and give them the opportunity to apply for jobs and learn new skills."

A basic service will be provided instead of the existing one which will offer 512Kbps download speeds and 1GB of data transfer per month as well as inclusive UK weekend calls and anytime calls to other TalkTalk customers. Calls to premium, international and mobile numbers will be barred however. Eligibility will be determined on a case-by-case basis by contacting TalkTalk customer services.

While this may be commendable one fears it is more about avoiding the disconnect fees (and potential re-connect if the customer does pay and return) of the WLR/CPS+adsl lines rather than actually looking out for the customer. Lets be fair, I suspect most customers have more to worry about than their £15 plus phone bill.

Can I be the first to suggest that a lot of TalkTalk customers might choose this option simply to get a speed boost?

As a shareholder in CPW this worries me! It's quite possibly a reaction to a significant increase in disconnection requests. If they're losing customers fast enough to necessitate this then it looks like trouble ahead. Time to sell?

The 1GB limit means they'll be raking in *more* money from many of those people thanks to bandwidth charges.

i left tt because the "speed" of my broadband had dropped from 1.5 to .3 meg. went back to bt for landline and sky for broadband and amazingly I am now getting 2.6meg. AndrueC u r right!!

Why do a few people always critisise ISP's, when they are trying to help,O.K it might not be much, but I have not heard of other ISP's doing anything, after all no one is making you ask TalkTalk for help, it is up to the indivdual to approach them and I think paying TalkTalk for my internet and phone connection is very reasonable at approx:£17 per month, when I was paying anything up to £34/40 per month using BT and Tiscali.

It seems a bit of a shame that the free call alowance is weekend and evening - not many HR departments and/or job agencies are answering the telephone then - the DHSS & Jobcenters definately aren't :-(

Why not also complain about the fact that TalkTalk are not giving free assistance with creating CVs, and also fail to give free career advice, for those suffering job loss.

1 GB limit HELPS job seekers :-
a) they spend more time looking for work instead of looking at videos;
b) if EVERY customer applied to have it free, no-one would be evaluated case-by-case.

Can we blame TalkTalk every time we get wheel-clamped ?

Do you Moaning Minnies have nothing better to do than to criticise a free concession just because it comes from TalkTalk ?

Well done TalkTalk. They are actually *doing* something to help the people who are struggling. Just like they revolutionised the market with their inclusive (aka "free") broadband offer.

I've been with them for a year and a half now on LLU, after they got rid of the *huge* backlog of new customers. Speed is around 5.4mb, *very* reliable, longest outage is around 30 sec in all that time. Full inclusive calls package. Rental + calls + broadband is absoultely top value for this pensioner.

Alan - A 1GB limit isn't much when you consider the sort of rich media websites many companies have these days, and you can spent a long time on them looking for their carefully hidden jobs sections...

And it's not a "free" concession, it's something designed to screw people with bandwidth charges...
