Sling extend LiveTV service to Europe
Friday 28 November 2008 17:09:53 by Andrew Ferguson

The Slingbox devices have been around for a while and allow you to view your home TV while not at home, or stream the picture to a computer somewhere on your own local network.

To view the stream until now it has required you to install the Slingbox software on your PC, but Sling Media has released to European users the beta of its in browser software.

One of the advantages of the Slingbox is that it allows you to control your PVR remotely and thus manage the disk space, so that if you forget to setup a recording you can remote into the box and add it. Or if the box is filling up, you could watch some content at whatever quality the upstream bandwidth from your home will allow.

I can't find details, but it seems this needs a special Windows-specific plugin in order to work. If installing a plugin is required, it's surely little better than having to install dedicated software. Users of locked-down PCs still won't be able to install it, and neither will Mac or Linux users! At least it supports Firefox...
