Sony PSP moves to download model for games
Friday 10 October 2008 11:15:18 by Andrew Ferguson

While the big screen consoles such as the XBox, PS3 and Wii grab many of the headlines, the Sony PSP continues to battle it out with devices like the Nintendo DS. From October 15th Japanese users of the Sony PSP will have a Playstation Store directly accessible from the Sony PSP when the device is running firmware version 5.0 or higher. The store will allow people to download games directly via the WiFi connection to the devices memory card.

How long before this store will be available in the UK is unknown, but it shows the continuing trend for making media available as a download. For companies, the attraction is that they can sell stuff with out the need to produce physical media, and hopefully this will be reflected by a reduction in price.

People with the Sony PSP are soon to be offered another way of playing games. With some games it is currently possible to play head to head with another PSP owner if within WiFi range of each other, a new 'ADHOC party for PSP' service is due to be launched in Japan first that would use the PS3 console to allow PSP owners to play selected titles against other PSP owners over the Internet.

Much angst has been expressed about how the BBC iPlayer will bring the internet to its knees, but the amount of content both in terms of size and sources is constantly increasing. While at present the average monthly broadband usage figure is still relatively low at around 3GB to 7GB, this is rising and once the current generation of children have disposable income to buy content we may see things change more rapidly.

Dont count on it hitting here anytime soon, Japanese PSP gamer have had a function where they can download old PS One games for a while and apparantely Europe is never getting that either.

If you want to talk big bandwidth that makes many people iplayer use look tiny, look out for 360 film downloads a NEW service state side has recently been announce that will work as a sort of silent partner with netflix.

UK PSP owners can download PS One games via the store on a PS3 and plug in the PSP via USB to load the games.

^^^ Well i did not know that and i may be wrong but in Japan i dont think the PS3 part of the equation is needed, i know at initial launch it was but i dont believe it is now (admit i may be wrong on that though). Either way intersting story and i agree its another thing that may encourage heavier use, not only here but also the US which have recently had a few cable company out there throttling and capping people... Again the future and what will become of ISPs is interesting as content over the net gets larger and larger.
