A consortium of companies, Earthlease, is showing more interest in BT's local loop business. Its first approach in May was dismissed by BT management. According to FT.com, it has indicated its intention to "be flexible" about the bid, showing that it is keen on taking over this core part of BT's business.
It is difficult to tell what the effect of another company owning the rights to the local loop would be, but one would assume access to a range of broadband providers would improve local telecommunications services with a wider range of choice for the consumer.
