Major incident with Karoo ADSL services

The network status pages of Karoo who supply broadband in the Hull area of the UK reveal a major incident affecting customers in the area.

23-01-2008 10:20:54 - We are currently experiencing a major incident with our Broadband service affecting a large number of customers. You may continue to experience problems connecting to your Broadband service throughout the rest of the day. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you.

23-01-2008 09:52:50 - Some customers may be experiencing a problem when trying to connect to service. Our engineers are working to resolve the issue. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you.

An update is expected around 5pm which will hopefully see people getting their service back. Incidents like this can often reveal how reliant we have become on broadband access, and leave businesses panicking to find an emergency connection. The moral being to keep some form of backup connection available - use of a Wi-Fi hotspot is not guaranteed as manner of these actually use an ADSL connection for backhaul connectivity.

I'll never understand why the people of Hull and Hull Council keep electing the same old councillors who maintain the illegal and pathetic monopolised service that is Kingston Communications who as I understand it run Karoo ADSL.

Why don't they learn?

Why hasn't someone taken Hull Council to European COurt over their appauling practices?

Why does Hull not have an open infrastructure to allow competition?

It's a bizzare isolated and luddite system up there frankly which is costing residents of Hull money as:
No competition = No competitive prices.

But then I wonder how much Hull Council and its Councillors hold in shares in Kingston Communications..

Government Corruption at it's best.

Hull City Council sold their shares in KC a long time ago. The KC network is open to anyone who wants to compete, but nobody can be bothered with such a small market.

Karoo charge the same for their wholesale business as they do for the end consumer price.

That's insane and as good as mafia type control, if BT did that there would be massive uproar.

And while they might sold their shares, how councillors are on the board? have Family/Friends with jobs there etc?


KC screams: illegal monopoly.

Like BT have never changed the name of their Wholesale side of the business LOL (ouch my sides)

I wonder what went wrong, mine has been fine all day :) apparently the issue is fixed now though:

Kingston's wholesale access pricing means that other competitors cannot viably compete with KC's own Internet prices. There needs to be some action taken from Ofcom/EU Competition board.

What ever it was it didn't affect the managed connections on the so called Platinum service.

It's still an apalling failure for a service that is in a monopoly situation.

A survey of a couple hundred businesses in Hull was commissioned by the City Council a couple of years ago, when they still held shares in KC, asking what they thought about IT infrastructure and services provided in Hull and in particular how KC performed. The report was so damning it was never published!! So much for Hull being a leader in the digital revolution....

I've been with Karoo for about five years and they are crap AND GETTING WORSE.I'm paying £24.99 for an 8Mb service and receiving 2. No matter how much we complain nothing happens. the service constantly drops out. Can another company enter the market and stop this crapoply
