Free laptop with 3's mobile broadband
Wednesday 09 January 2008 12:00:00 by Andrew Ferguson

Free laptops with broadband are not exactly new with Carphone Warehouse is already running a promotion with AOL Broadband. They have now replicated this offer with a £35/month 3 Mobile Broadband bundle. More information can be found at MobileChoiceUK.

Carphone Warehouse has a number of mobile broadband packages already, but the free laptop offer does not appear to feature yet. The 3 offer will get you a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop, USB modem dongle, 3GB data allowance and 200 text messages per month.

It is not clear how long the contract is, but it is likely to be 24 months, in which case people might be interested in looking at the T-Mobile offer where for £20 a month the Dell laptop can had for £199.95 and a 24 month contract.

The 3G networks while bypassing the problems of telephone line length and ADSL coverage still often seems to suffer from patchy coverage so be sure to check that your chosen provider has a good 3G signal in your area. Obviously there is the advantage of not requiring a fixed phone line.

NO such thing as a free lunch unless you nick it :-)

One dell 1520 laptop = £389
£35/month for 24 months = £840
£840(service cost) - £389(RRP of laptop)= £451
£451 divide by 24 months= £18.7916(recurring)

Or in other words you get a service average in price per month to what you can get from most mobile operators... and you still end up realistically paying for the laptop.

Just like the AOL, carphone warehouse and other numerous "SO CALLED" deals before this its nothing of the sort and you pay for a cheap bottom end laptop anyway.

"As well as the laptop, new customers will get a 3 USB modem ‘dongle', along with 3GB of data and 200 text messages each month."

Hardly what one might call a generous data allowance really.....

"Hardly what one might call a generous data allowance really!" - until you contemplate the size of connection to the typical mobile base station and realise it's going to be Contention City, Arizona.

Hold on, take a look at, the Broadband Plus service 24 month contract (which includes 3GB of usage) is only £15 a month, and you get a free USB modem.

So, based on Carpetburn's numbers, you pay more for this deal than going direct to Three and Dell, quality!

I "do the numbers" a little differently:

3's Broadband Plus (3GB) is normally £15/mth
plus 200 SMS allowances is normally £10/mth
so you'd be paying £10/mth (ie. £240 if 2-year contract) for a reasonable laptop.

Seems ideal for someone who travels around a bit and needs a new basic laptop.

Ah I didn't include the SMS...

.... still, why would anyone want to send SMS via their data only modem? You would use your mobile or e-mail wouldn't you?
