Wednesday 05 December 2007 12:35:52 by Andrew Ferguson

Eurostat the body responsible for collating statistics across the EU has published its Internet usage in 2007, Households and individuals report.

The breakdowns are interesting particularly the variation across the countries within the EU. The following table shows the percentage of individuals in each country who have performed the specific Internet activity listed.

Subject Denmark Germany France Ireland Spain Italy Sweden UK
Use a search engine 80% 73% 59% 55% 55% 41% 76% 67%
Send email with attachment 72% 60% 47% 45% 55% 38% 64% 62%
Use virus, spyware tools 60% 45% 41% 16% 30% 19% 48% 33%
Find download/install software 52% 32% 38% 15% 26% 19% 38% 35%
Use chatrooms, online discussion 33% 28% 25% 12% 29% 25% 19% 22%
Use Internet to make phone calls 25% 14% 29% 8% 9% 13% 12% 10%
Peer to peer file sharing for music, movies 13% 8% 14% 6% 20% 13% 19% 13%
Create a web page 18% 10% 14% 6% 9% 9% 13% 14%

The full table published by Eurostat contains details from more countries in the EU, but would be too large to publish in full on our news pages.

if they accurate or near accurate whilst its still a minority in every country for p2p use its looking like a growing number now in double figures. Denmark appearing to be the most advanced country.

So "Peer to peer file sharing for music, movies" takes up 13% of the total UK Internet population. Yet often we here that our top 5% of users are on full download so must be capped or slowed down by all of the ISP's. Is it me or is the Math wrong here?

Remember that in France the majority of ISPs provide a modem that has a phone socket in it, and in the unbundled areas, the ISP's VOIP service can become your sole service (no idea on the issue of dialling the equivalent of 999). I'm with Free, and can call landlines in the EU and North America for free.

I didn't quite understand the virus question - is this for updates to virus software or for catching them?
With percentages this low, no wonder there is so much spam etc in the world!

Guzzo it's you! On average P2Ps use many, many times more than the non-P2P users. I make constant use of the internet every day including VPN with remote control software. If I didn't know otherwise I would have classed my usage as heavy, but I typically use less than 10GB a month - even though I've started using the BBC iPlayer.

That is because VoIP sucks on the internet and real phone calls are so much better quality and are so cheap it is hardly worth the effort to set-up.

Remember IPlayer and 4oD are P2P technically, and people can happily download just the one or two episodes.

The top x% probably refers to people with a shelf full of DVD-R discs with material that has never been watched.

" the percentage of individuals in each country who have performed the specific Internet activity listed" - so 13% of the population have used P2P, perhaps even only once, this is not inconsistent with 5% of the users using half the bandwidth or some such.

Another pointless chart like as if only 67% percent have ever used any type of search engine. Wheres the figure for people that have used FTP or how about newsgroups, IRC and sooooo much more.... pointless

Where exactly is gaming on that list? Someone payed a load of money to come up with meaningless stats. Send email with attachment i mean jeez.....
Posted by herdwick over 9 years ago
"as if only 67% percent have ever used any type of search engine" FFS it is 67% OF THE POPULATION that have used a search engine, no doubt the same 67% that have internet access.

quote"FFS it is 67% OF THE POPULATION that have used a search engine, no doubt the same 67% that have internet access."
Opps someone didnt read the PDF first...
quote"Table 1: Internet access and broadband connections by households in EU27, 2006 - 2007 (%)" the uk scores 63%
table 3 says quote"Table 3: Individuals who have ever carried out specific Internet related activities, EU27, 2007 (%)" Use a search
engine to find information the uk scores 67%... (continued)
Posted by CARPETBURN over 9 years ago
From that alone its unclear if that 67% is for the population or just those that have net access. Why would they bother with table 1 showing the amount that have connections and then base the rest of the results on population? Surely that throws figures completely out of whack?
Posted by herdwick over 9 years ago
"Opps someone didnt read the PDF first..." no, you didn't read it properly did you.

2007 UK households with internet access 67%
2007 Individuals who have ever used a search engine UK 67%

Nothing could be clearer then "percentage of individuals" as a footnote confirms. Certainly there is nothing to imply that only 67% of internet users use a search engine, as you did in a cack-handed attempt to ridicule the stats.

Errr look again...
Table 1: Internet access and broadband connections by households in EU27, 2006 - 2007 (%) UK is 63% (NOT 67%)

Table 3: Individuals who have ever carried out specific Internet related activities, EU27, 2007 (%) UK is 67% for 'Use a search
engine to find information'

Even if those figure are based On just households that have the internet from the population as a whole IT IS still saying 4% of people in the UK which HAVE a connection HAVE never used a search engine. If you think that makes sense or is right in anyway im shocked!
Posted by CARPETBURN over 9 years ago
Maybe im completely reading things wrong, either way it is another set of pointless charts that doesnt demonstrate or prove anything!
Posted by aciddave over 9 years ago
Is it me, or does it say that 33% of the UK use virus and spyware tools? Shouldn't that read ANTI virus and ANTI Spyware tools? or are we getting better at writing virus and spyware as a whole? LMAO :D
Posted by CARPETBURN over 9 years ago
LOL@aciddave, i wouldnt pay much attention its pretty clear its another meaningless chart compiled by yet another bunch that must lead boring lives.
Posted by herdwick over 9 years ago
"Table 1: Internet access and broadband connections by households in EU27, 2006 - 2007 (%) UK is 63% (NOT 67%)" wrong again.

It is clearly 63% in 2006 and 67% in 2007. Here's a cut & paste :-

2006 2007
UK 63 67

The statistics are actually saying that 67% of UK individuals have used a search engine. Nothing more or less.

At least we know your "opinions" are based on the inability to read even the simplest fact from a table. LMFAO.

Yep and as i mentioned elsewhere only 35% download software do they?? So that means the majority never update software, never run windows update, havent downloaded anything above WMP 9, cant view sites that need flash and java and their updates and all the people that upgrade to vista wont be downloading needed ATI graphics drivers for CERTAIN ATI cards to work on vista? Yep accurate chart very accurate. As accurate as poor blind chap playing a game of darts
Posted by CARPETBURN over 9 years ago
Oh and only 10% use the internet to make phone calls do they?? Oh so thats why all these ISPs are wasting money introducing new VOIP services.... And 21CN is coming...
Its cos nobody uses them... Oh yea its all so clear and obvious now the chart is a modern day marvel of accuracy.
