Could more free Wi-Fi access be on the way?
Wednesday 21 November 2007 10:24:37 by Andrew Ferguson

CBS Outdoor is bringing free Wi-Fi to New York City. The service will use Wi-Fi access points attached to outdoor billboards with the service generating revenue via an advertising supported homepage.

New York is a long way to travel to get free Wi-Fi access, but CBS Outdoor has a presence in the UK with contracts to manage advertising on the London Underground and Arriva buses.

We all normally associate advertising on the tube with posters, but this is changing and 24 tube stations are set to have a projector system installed in 2008. Hopefully it is not too much of a leap of imagination to see that if a broadband line and wireless access point were installed, Wi-Fi access on the platforms could be the next step.

Oh joy now all we need is a free neon sign with it saying "here little teenage thug mug me, free laptop"

I was thinking the same. Am I the only person who really would not be pulling out a laptop - do I travel in the wrong areas or am I just paranoid?

I can see this as a good thing, you don't need a laptop, just pull out your iPhone/Touch/Wifi enabled device to see more about a certain product then check your emails or whatever. You don't think twice before putting the latest expensive mobile phone to your ear do you, so whats the difference?

Errr mobile phones are free with contract and the most expensive PAYG phone is around £150..... thats just a tad different to 2 grands worth of laptop.

So what bloody fool pays as much as two grand for a laptop? I guess the same sort that pays one grand for a handbag. Still its always been said that - " A fool and his money are soon parted"

That would be a fool that wants a serious all singing all dancing machine and not something in the bargain bucket bin in currys.

That may be so but they are still an expensive piece of electronics - the contract just hides the true cost.

The other thing is, yes the initial phone may be free, but to replace it, if it isn't covered by insurance, would cost you.

Im glad you mentioned insurance, the other 2 posters seem to have forgot about that, and lets be honest with all the mobile phone thieving that goes on ya be mad not to take the extra and cheap insurance with your pay monthly mobile phone, especially if its worth a hundred or hundreds of pounds. I dunno about others but the 2 mobiles i have came with free insurance, i didnt pay a penny, all i pay is my monthly charge and bill.
