Freedom2Surf has announced a package that is meant to provide a better gaming experience for customers. The new Broadband 4 Gamers (BB4G) package is priced at £24.99 per month with a 50GB usage allowance, and for an extra £6 per month can be boosted to a larger 100GB allowance.
The service is optimised to reduce the number of hops to Wireplay gaming service servers, which offer games such as Half-Life Counterstrike, Quake, Ultima Online and other games. Additionally since the service uses an up to 8Mbps rate adaptive service, all connections are connected using fast mode rather than interleaving. Using fast mode can help to reduce latency. Importantly F2S ensure no traffic management restrictions are placed on traffic to/from the Wireplay servers.
The product carries a monthly contract, however the main proviso is that if the free setup is used and you leave the service within six months of joining, a £49.99 setup fee will be recovered.
While Freedom2Surf claim an 'up to 50% lower pings', this is largely dependent on what options are in place currently on your ADSL line, and the state of your providers own internal network along with their peering arrangements. Those likely to see the most improvement are those who have options like interleaving enabled on their line. Interleaving is a method of making an ADSL line more tolerant to errors at the expense of some latency, perhaps doubling the first hop latency.
