Tiscali and Sky in channel tie-up
Tuesday 22 May 2007 09:24:41 by John Hunt

The Times reports that BSkyB is in talks with Tiscali about running their basic channels (Sky One, Sky News etc.) over the HomeChoice television service. These are the same channels withdrawn from Virgin Media at the end of February following a contractual dispute between BSkyB and Virgin Media.

The news follows the rejection of an offer from Sky to Virgin Media to split the difference between the bids at last negotiation. Tiscali are reported to be looking at a price-per-subscriber higher than that of Virgin Media's last offer. Tiscali/HomeChoice reportedly have 1.48 million subscribers and Sky are keen to increase coverage to as many homes as possible. Tiscali are also in talks, at a preliminary stage, with Pipex over a possible acquisition of their voice and broadband division. This could see the potential to increase Tiscali's Television roll out to a larger audience.

"HomeChoice reportedly have 1.48 million subscribers" - really ? Nah, that might be the total Tiscali connections but its at least 10 times more than the number of Homechoice users.

Im more interested in this quote "The news follows the rejection of an offer from Sky to Virgin Media to split the difference between the bids at last negotiation." I always thought Sky were the bad guys but if that is true it seems Virgin are the shambolic and unreasonable ones, especially when you consider the caps they have just imposed on their cable broadband service also. As for Homechoice as they have links with Tiscali I personally wouldnt touch the service.

Homechoice only has about 30,000 customers at 145 exchanges. I'm surprised that Sky are considering such chicken feed for their channels unless they are working out whether to bid for Tiscali to get their technology for themselves.

Who knows on what the why's and wherefor's are but you sure can bet Sky will get the best deal for whatever they are looking for.

I thought that Homechoice had over 50,000 connections - maybe that is only older figures I remember.
