Tiscali has launched a film download service called 'Movies Now' in conjunction with Arts Alliance Media, a digital film distributor. The service offers over 500 films and specialist entertainment programmes via the Tiscali portal. The service is not however limited to Tiscali customers, so anyone can use it.
Prices range from £0.99 to £3.49 for rental depending on the film and quality chosen. You are granted 7 days to view the title once the download is complete and can view it as many times as you like within 24 hours or 48 hours (depending on the title) from when you begin viewing it.
You should bear mind mind that downloading the films will form part of your downloads, so if you have a package with a fair usage policy or other caps/limits, this will count towards them. As such the cost of the film may be higher than the simple cost of renting it. Tiscali quote the average 'high quality' film as 500MB (megabytes) and 'super high quality' at 1.2GB (gigabytes). The distribution system does not use peer-to-peer technology but direct downloads from Tiscali servers. As with the BBC service launching later this year, it is only currently available to Windows PC users.
