France Gets Government Support For Broadband
Monday 09 July 2001 16:39:00 by Andrew Ferguson

Tim Richardson in an article on The Register reports that the French Government is to provide £1 billion worth of cheap loans to give a nationwide broadband rollout a kick start.

Reuters the source of the article quote the French as saying: "If we bowed to the logic of the market, in five years time a quarter of the French population and 70-80 percent of our land mass would not have access to high-speed links."

As the dropping out of LLU operators and the slowdown of the BT rollout shows - private companies are struggling to raise the money necessary to install broadband across anything other than the densely populated areas. Even cable modem rollouts are very patchy in the UK.
