Picking a broadband service provider and in particular one using ADSL is always difficult and any extra information to help people narrow down their choices is helpful. To this end Epitiro has published its latest set of performance indicators for the last quarter. The press release for this can be found here.
The tests are carried out by testing each of the major service providers from 11 locations around the UK, which resulted in 622,147 data points which are used to produce ten different metrics. The tests covered ADSL based connections from some of the larger operators. Readers should note no ADSL2+ or cable broadband services were included. The results are shown below:

The eleven test locations were Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Hook, London (x2), Manchester, Swansea and Teeside. The connection speed was a measure of the line sync speed between the ADSL modem and the local exchange, and has increased from 3817Kbps in the third quarter to 5728Kbps which is a reflection on the number of providers now using Max up to 8Mbps connections. Since this figure is from a limited number of locations it cannot be extrapolated to give an average line speed across the country.
Epitiro has created a single top 5 table based on all the results, and we have reproduced the 3rd and 4th quarters for 2006 below:
