It was only recently that the announcement was made about BT partnering with Microsoft, in its push for an IPTV product. The latest news is the teleco is set to retail its IPTV box for just £70, which compares favourably with the existing Freeview boxes which start at around £30.
The service is currently dubbed BT Freeview Plus, and the set top box, will include an 80GB hard disk to allow storage of material. We presume this means a system not unlike Sky+, in addition to the downloading of demand content over the broadband connection. We can look forward to a trial in early 2006, with a late summer retail launch. More details can be found over at PVRUK.com.
The one concern will be whether the service will be available to consumers on only the BT Retail ISP packages, or available to customers on all broadband providers. We suspect like the BT Fusion product you will be tied to the BT Retail packages, and as yet no indications of how this will interact with the usage allowances that exist on the BT Retail products have being made.
