PlusNet launch free PlusTalk service
Tuesday 14 June 2005 09:49:00 by Andrew Ferguson

PlusNet is the latest service provider to embrace Voice over IP (VoIP), with the launch of its PlusTalk product. The service is free and only available to PlusNet broadband customers.

The service is based around software that can be downloaded from the PlusNet portal, and provides free calls using this software to other people on the service, or partner providers. The service uses the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) protocol, so you do not get a second telephone number but rather a SIP address, that other SIP users can call. Those PlusNet users on the PAYG services should remember that use of the service will count towards their data transfer totals. It is estimated that usage equates to around 70 to 80MB per hour.
