Wednesday 30 March 2005 10:55:00 by Andrew Ferguson

Audio streaming over the Internet appears to have hit the big time, during January 2005, the BBC logged 4.4 million hours of on-demand listening and 6.8 million hours for live radio shows. Radio 1 and Radio 4 proved the most popular, with The Archers been the most popular single programme. More details are on the BBC News website.

These listening figures mean that on average each broadband user in the UK listened to almost 2 hours of BBC Radio per month. The streaming used by the BBC is a fairly low speed, after the initial buffering, it runs at around 5KB/sec, which is around 18MB (MegaByte) per hour.
