MetroNet gives its guard dog extra powers
Thursday 03 March 2005 14:54:00 by Andrew Ferguson

MetroNet is introducing a free website blocking and filtering service on its ADSL services. The system is known as Cerberus, which according to mythology is a three headed dog that guards the entrance to Hades.

MetroNet already offer their customers a free firewall service, this filtering service has the ability to black list and also whitelist websites. This means you can define a list of sites you don't want people to see, or alternatively, supply a list of approved sites. Customers are able to create their own lists, so have the freedom to to block or not block specific sites. The blocking is done on the actual URL of the site, rather than keyword searches on the content.

A lot more detail on the Cerberus system can be found on the MetroNet website here.

MetroNet was the first ISP to offer pay as you go broadband services in the UK (April 2003), and currently they have over 1000 new customers joining each month, with a growth of 300% in the last 12 months.
