Wireless broadband deal on way for Western Isles
Thursday 14 October 2004 17:21:00 by Andrew Ferguson

The islands of Lewis, Harris, North Uist, South Uist, Benbecula and Barra in the Western Isles of Scotland are set to benefit from a deal between The Connected Communities project and NEC UK. Details are over on the Computing website.

The plan seems to be to use microwave point to point links to form a backbone, and have users accessing the backbone at nodes that have a 5.8GHz transmitter. The funding comes from several areas, including a government Broadband Fund and the Highlands & Islands Special Transitional Programme.
