Top 10 Fastest Broadband ISPs for September 2004
Monday 11 October 2004 11:51:00 by Sebastien Lahtinen

September's speed test results maintain Zen in the top position although at a slightly smaller margin of only 1.3 Kbps above Virgin which climbed into second position last month. Eclipse Internet, one of the previous leaders dropped from third to sixth position.

1 Zen Internet 453.1 Kbps 235.4 Kbps 1329
2 451.8 Kbps 235.0 Kbps 1038
3 450.9 Kbps 235.4 Kbps 1318
4 PIPEX Internet Limited 448.9 Kbps 233.9 Kbps 3827
5 PlusNet plc 447.7 Kbps 234.5 Kbps 1911
6 Eclipse Internet 446.2 Kbps 233.9 Kbps 1291
7 BT Broadband & BT Yahoo! 445.5 Kbps 232.5 Kbps 5605
8 Freedom 2 Surf PLC 444.9 Kbps 230.8 Kbps 945
9 Demon 441.6 Kbps 228.7 Kbps 667
10 AOL 437.7 Kbps 232.1 Kbps 1369

This month has seen AOL climb into the top ten as Demon increased its performance putting it into ninth position. Wanadoo was probably the ISP with most to lose last month having dropped from fourth to eleventh position. The top ten average fell by 0.2 Kbps downstream and 0.6 Kbps upstream although the difference between the number one and ten positions decreased as Zen's lead was diminished.

As usual, we would encourage users to seek views and information on ISPs from multiple sources and not rely just on speed test results in making their choice. Previous months' results can be found here [seb]
