Griffin launches bonded ADSL up to 16 Mbps
Monday 03 May 2004 18:40:00 by Sebastien Lahtinen

Griffin Internet is joining other providers in offering a channel bonded service which allows services as far as 16 Mbps downstream and 2 Mbps upstream using eight 2 Mbps 20:1 contended lines. The bonding service incurs an additional setup charge of £25+VAT as well as an on-going monthly charge of £10+VAT per line. A pre-configured Cisco router is also available from £1179+VAT for two bonded lines.

Bonded DSL services are becoming very tempting due to the high cost of symmetric services and increasing demand for upstream bandwidth. Even now, most 1 Mbps and 2 Mbps services only supply 256 Kbps (a quarter or eighth of the downstream speed), however providers are currently using this for premium services targeted at growing businesses. Most residential users wouldn't have a second phone line installed to increase their Internet speed, so the market for this is still quite limited, hence the lack of bonded solutions with hardware affordable for home users.
