Update on BT cable fire in Manchester
Tuesday 30 March 2004 11:03:00 by Andrew Ferguson

BT has issued another update on the problems in Manchester. Teams have now gained access to the area and hopefully services will start to be restored soon.

"BT was given clearance to access the deep level tunnel at 21.00 on Monday night.

Teams have worked through the night getting equipment into the tunnel. We have had to set up power, lighting and ventilation systems down there. Jointing on the first cables has already begun and will continue round the clock. We cannot say at this stage how long the whole process will take because of the difficult conditions in the tunnel.

As cables are brought back into service, service to customers will be gradually restored. Additionally we have set up alternative ducts between the two buildings involved and will be putting in new fibre cable during the course of the day.

We now have two banks of payphones in place (at Macclesfield and Prestbury) and we are continuing to work closely with the emergency authorities to reduce the impact on communities. "
