ISPReview has a copy of a letter sent out to customers and pre-registrants of Community Mesh stating that the company will be switching its network off on Friday 16th January 2004 due to lack of funds.
This wireless provider did have some areas up and running, and the impact of simply switching off will not do the wireless cause much good. One possible problem is the reluctance of consumers to switch service providers. Add to this the fact that in many areas people can now see ADSL arriving inside 12 months, and people are not willing to pay the £100 or more install fees for a wireless network.
Wireless broadband as a technology will have a very important role in ensuring good broadband coverage of the UK. The problem for many smaller projects is getting sustainable funding to see a project through to when the initial investment will have been paid off.
